What To Expect at Your Child’s First Pediatrician Visit

Your child is your pride and joy but requires a great deal of care, such as routine doctor's visits. At Sacoto Pediatrics, serving Falls Church, VA, and the nearby region, we offer wellness visits, and you and your child will see a pediatrician from our practice, either Dr. Vasanthi Chadive or Dr. Maria Sacoto. So what can you expect at the first one?

Completing Paperwork

Although filling out a medical history report can be a pain, it's essential for us to provide your little one with care. We use it as a reference guide.

Some of the questions we'll ask include the following:

  • Date of birth
  • Any known allergies
  • Diagnosed health conditions
  • Previous injuries or surgeries

Taking Height, Weight, and Vitals (Exam)

During the visit at our office, we'll take your child's height and weight. Then, the doctor will compare these results to the averages and determine if your child is growing normally.

A physician from our practice will use a stethoscope to listen to your child's heart and lungs. We'll also check your kid's heart rhythm and other vitals throughout this portion of the exam. Moreover, we'll look inside your child's ears.

Speaking With a Physician

Part of your visit with a pediatrician in Falls Church, VA, will include speaking with the practitioner. Some of this part of the exam will vary based on your child's age. With that being said, though, aspects of your child's health, like how much sleep they get, will be questions the practitioner asks.

Our pediatrician may provide you with lifestyle recommendations to help your child, such as how much exercise they need or ways to incorporate healthy eating.

Besides questions from the pediatrician, this is also a prime time for you to ask any questions you have or express any concerns.

Depends on Age

Some aspects of how the visit goes will depend on your child's age. For instance, they may need vaccinations at the time of the visit. Infants will need to have their head circumference measured. Children around school age will need to have their vision examined.

Possible Chronic Condition Management

If your child has a chronic condition, part of their visit with us will include monitoring it. For instance, we'll ask questions about any symptoms. Sometimes, we'll order blood work to better assess the condition.

In some cases, this portion of the visit will include us making changes to your child's current treatment plan.

At Sacoto Pediatrics, serving Falls Church, VA, Dr. Sacoto will help your child grow and develop as healthily as possible. And the first visit is relatively straightforward.
